Professor Gates Scandal Continues as Obama Calls Cambridge Officer but Offers NO Apology:
Today president Barack Obama made a surprise appearance at the White House press briefing in an attempt to address the political firestorm of the "Professor Gates Scandal", or as we like to call it, "Gates Gate"....
This morning, July 24th, Cambridge police officials held a press conference demonstrating unfettered support for Sgt. Crowley, the arresting officer in the Gates case. The Police Union demanded apologies from President Obama and Mass. Governor Deval Patrick, a close friend to the president, following their quick criticism of Crowley. "The Cambridge Police acted stupidly". The President said on Wed. Night.
Following the Police Union's public call for apology Obama made his own surprise pitch to gain control over the situation. He explained to the White House Press Core that he had spoken with officer Crowley and finds him to be an outstanding individual, suggesting the unfortunate incidence was a case of two good people (Gates and Crowley) unable to come to a good solution to their problem.
However, it is worth noting, that despite inviting Crowley over to the White House to share a beer with the President and Prof. Gates, Obama issued no apology for his choice of words, only stating that it was unfortunate that the press had run away with words he might have, "calibrated better."
Whether this story is over and the Cambridge Police will accept this non-apology apology, and when the President can go back to his focus on health care reform, all remain to be seen.
